How to Adjust a Plan When You Fall Behind
Adjusting a plan you've fallen behind on means honestly re-assessing what's actually achievable from here (not the original schedule), deciding what to cut or re-scope rather than trying to do everything faster, and updating the target date or milestones to match reality — rather than either quietly abandoning the plan or grinding forward on a schedule that's already false.
Falling behind is normal, not a sign of failure
Almost every real plan falls behind its original schedule somewhere — new information, unexpected difficulty, competing priorities. Treating this as a normal part of planning rather than a personal failure makes it much easier to actually adjust rather than either quit or pretend it isn't happening.
Re-assess from where you actually are
The first step isn't panicking about the gap to the original schedule — it's honestly assessing what's realistically achievable from your current position, which is a different (and more useful) question than "how do I catch up to the old plan."
Cut or re-scope before trying to compress
The instinct is often to try to do the same amount of work faster. Usually the better move is deciding what can be cut, simplified, or deferred — a smaller version of the goal actually finished beats the full original version abandoned halfway.
Update the target date honestly
Keeping a target date that's already clearly unrealistic doesn't create urgency — it creates a plan that's quietly false, which undermines trust in the whole planning process. A revised, realistic date is more useful than an aspirational one you've already missed.
Let the adjustment become the new plan, not an exception to it
Once you've re-scoped, the adjusted plan is the real plan going forward — not a temporary deviation from the "real" original one. Treating it as fully legitimate (not a lesser fallback) is what makes it something you'll actually follow.
