Next Action
A next action is the single, concrete, physically doable step that moves a goal or project forward right now — not the goal itself, and not a vague intention, but a specific task you could start in the next few minutes.
Definition
The term comes from David Allen's Getting Things Done methodology, which draws a sharp line between a project ("learn Spanish," which can't be "done" in one sitting) and a next action ("review 20 Spanish vocabulary flashcards," which can). A goal or project only becomes actionable once it has a defined next action attached to it — otherwise it's just an intention sitting on a list.
Why It Matters
"Learn Spanish" is not something anyone can sit down and do — it has no clear starting point, so it's easy to let it sit untouched indefinitely while feeling vaguely guilty about it. A next action removes that ambiguity: there's exactly one small thing to do, which is far more likely to actually get started than an open-ended goal.
How It Works
Finding a next action means asking, for a given goal or stalled project, "what is the very next physical step, specifically?" — not the whole plan, just the next single move. Once that action is done, a new next action should immediately be findable, so the goal always has exactly one clear thing pointing at it rather than going quiet again.
Example
For the goal "pass the GED math exam," the next action isn't "study math" — it's something specific like "complete the linear equations practice set in the Algebra skill tree," a single task that's obviously either started or not.
Common Mistakes
The most common mistake is confusing the goal with the next action — writing "learn Spanish" as a task on a to-do list, which just recreates the same ambiguity in list form. Another is letting a goal sit without any next action defined at all once the previous one is finished, silently turning an active goal back into an inert intention.
How RodionSkill Uses Next Action
RodionSkill's Action Layer resolves a real next action for every active Goal, Subject, and Skill Tree automatically — an executable Task or the first unlocked Skill Tree node — so a goal is never shown without something concrete to actually do about it, and never fakes an action by just re-displaying the goal itself.
