How to Combine Notes, Flashcards and Practice
Notes, flashcards, and practice each serve a different stage of learning — notes capture and organize understanding, flashcards maintain recall of discrete facts over time, and practice builds the ability to actually apply a skill — and combining all three, each doing the job it's actually good at, beats relying on any single one alone.
Notes are for capturing and organizing understanding
Notes are where a concept first gets written down in your own words, connected to related ideas, and made findable later. They're the raw material — good for understanding something once, not for keeping it fresh over months.
Flashcards are for keeping discrete facts and definitions fresh
Anything that's a fact, a definition, or a discrete piece of recall — vocabulary, formulas, key terms — decays over time without review. Flashcards with spaced repetition are the right tool specifically for that decay, not for deep understanding.
Practice is for building the ability to actually apply a skill
Neither notes nor flashcards prove you can do something — only doing it does. Practice (solving real problems, building real things) is what turns passive knowledge into an actual usable skill, and it's the only one of the three that mastery criteria should really be checked against.
A reasonable division of labor
New concept encountered -> capture it in notes. Discrete fact worth remembering long-term -> a flashcard. Skill that needs to actually be performed -> scheduled practice time. Using each tool for the job it's suited to beats trying to make one tool do all three.
Let them reinforce each other
A flashcard that keeps failing might point back to a note that needs re-reading. Practice that reveals a gap might turn into a new flashcard or a new note. Treated as connected rather than separate, the three stay aligned instead of drifting into their own silos.
